Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.


The Aone+ is a joint venture between Costain, Jacobs and Colas where they have been entrusted with completing a diverse range of maintenance, incident response, weather management and road engineering duties across over 4300 miles of major road network.  The network include Area 12 Yorkshire and Humberside and Area 4 in Kent which commenced from June 2016 for five years and have a combined estimated value of between £140m and £165 million per year.


What will I be doing?

The role of SHE Manager is to ensure the safety & wellbeing of our people through the development and delivery of a comprehensive and effective A-one+ SHE strategy. Co-ordinate policy and governance of A-one+ based on requirements of client and three parent companies within A-one+’s ways of working.


  • Liaising and informing the General Manager of any health, safety or environmental incidents.
  • Advising A-one+ staff and supply chain partners on matters relating to Health, Safety and Environment.
  • The maintenance and implementation of the health, safety & environment aspects of the IBMS+, liaison with the Quality Manager to ensure its effective delivery and
    conformance to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, as well as informing the BST Manager of all modifications to the IBMS+.
  • Assisting in the generation of procedures, systems and documentation as required on specialist subjects to improve safe and environmental working procedures.
  • Carrying out regular Health, Safety & Environment audits/inspections to review and monitor the effectiveness of the Integrated Business Management System.
  • Liaising with the HR & Training Manager for co-ordinating and resourcing H&S training and for liaising with managers on its implementation.
  • Managing a team of SHE Advisors
  • Support the implementation of the H&S strategy.
  • Provide assistance when requested on the assessment and appointment of sub- contractors.
  • Provide assistance in preparing and developing site HASEMPS and supporting documentation
  • When requested, advise on the preparation of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
  • Assist in the investigation of injuries, dangerous occurrences and other incidents where appropriate as required by the Project Manager
  • Manage the collection/compilation of the Projects accident statistics and other SHE performance measures. Ensuring that all monthly SHE reports are produced and circulated in a timely manner.
  • Ensure any Alerts, Briefings and circulars are disseminated as necessary
  • Attend meetings as required to discuss and advise on SHE matters.

About you

  • NEBOSH Diploma 
  • Chartered membership of IOSH.
  • Experience of working with executive level teams, professional and blue-collar employees.
  • Experience of SHE delivery at a senior functional level within:
    • a joint venture
    • highways environment
