  • About Costain and your project.

Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

Thames Tideway Tunnel, Main Works East is a £650m project recently secured by a Costain joint venture (“CVB”), to provide a new 7.2m diameter tunnel to divert waste from the Victorian built sewer from discharging into the Thames. The tunnel runs from Chambers Wharf to Abbey Mills where it connects with the Lee Tunnel. The works include: the main tunnel drive, a connection tunnel from Greenwich Pumping Station, shaft constructions, a connection to the newly constructed Lee Tunnel project, and minor works at Beckton Sewage Treatment, all as part of an overall project to reduce sewer discharge overflows into the River Thames. The works are scheduled to commence on site in March 2016 and complete in March 2022.

    What will I be doing?

The BIM Manager for our Tideway East contract will be responsible for managing and implementing BIM on the project, to deliver Tideway’s BIM requirements and to drive BIM to provide efficiencies for the CVB Joint Venture.

The role will require a pro-active person who can identify opportunities to derive efficiencies through BIM and investigate how 3D models, processes, derived data and associated outputs can be integrated with other technologies to create solutions to contract and Tideway challenges.

The primary focus will be the co-ordination of numerous Work Packages, aligned to the BIM Execution Plan, ensuring that deliverables are defined with the project team and ‘packaged’ into sets of information for distribution to the supply chain, collation of completed information and verification/validation of the data provided.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

    • Managing a large team of BIM specialists with differing levels of experience, overseeing their training requirements and providing mentoring where needed
    • Managing the Common Data Environment (CDE)
    • Liaising with the client for regular reviews of the Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) and updating/assuring the associated BIM Execution Plan
    • Co-ordination and review of Work Packages, liaising with the Asset Management team to provide asset data in the correct format at key milestones
    • 3D model management and federation, with multi-disciplinary co-ordination as required. The role is more focused on data management and team/supply chain co-ordination than clash detection and sequencing.
    • Ensuring that deliverables are provided according to the EIR, including associated neutral exchange formats and Data Drops (in IFC and COBie)
    • Ensuring that data returned from the supply chain is complete, verified and validated – and re-issuing with remedial instructions if not
    • Acting as the main point of contact for BIM, asset information and design-specific data management
    • Liaising with the BIM leads for the Central and West Tideway contracts as appropriate

    About you

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

    • Good communication skills are essential in this role, as liaison with supply chain, project team and Client is a key responsibility
    • A track record of digital delivery, with a good knowledge of data management, data validation and systems integration
    • Excellent knowledge of BIM, in particular data management and the 1192 suite of standards and specifications (this contract is pre-ISO19650)
    • Work equally well in a team environment and individually
