GIS Consultant

Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

Reporting to the Head of GIS, the successful candidate will deliver consultancy solutions through our Consultancy Capability to provide innovative geospatial solutions for our clients across the Transportation and Natural Resources divisions. This role will be home based and will require extensive travelling across the UK.

The successful candidate will have a background in and extensive experience of mapping and data, capturing and processing geospatial data and using it to develop Costain’s GIS solutions. With a strong academic background, they will draw upon their research skills to identify consultancy opportunities to implement solutions based on multiple layers of geospatial data and innovative modelling techniques.

The successful candidate will be experienced with the ESRI portfolio (including ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS Online and/or Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS for Server, and WebApp Builder). Experience with QGIS, FME and programming skills (eg., Python, Javascript) is desirable, as is an appreciation of remote sensing and IoT applications.

The role will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to learn new skills (both office- and site-based) and to work with different in-house teams from several disciplines to deliver innovative solutions.

The successful candidate must have a full, clean driving license and be legally able to work in the UK. The candidate must be willing to travel to contracts and/or customers as required with occasional work away from home.

Essential

• Either a degree qualification in GIS or a related field and more than 3 years work experience, or 5 years’ experience using GIS software
• Experience using ArcGIS Online, Enterprise, Field Apps, ArcGIS Desktop 10x and its extensions
• Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary consultancy
• Experience contributing to bids and tenders for work winning in a Geospatial context
• Basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint is essential), sufficient to work with software vendors as necessary.
• Good communicator and collaborative in approach with an ability to interpret and understand requirements – the role will involve working with numerous people from different parties.
• Proven experience of delivering high quality outputs to deadlines within pressurised environments
• Able to communicate the benefits of GIS internally and externally 
• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
• Holds or is able to attain security clearance

Desirable

• Experience automating GIS tasks using Python
• Experience using MS PowerBI for dashboards and data analytics
• Demonstratable experience of creating work benches in FME
