    We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Prototype Technician to work for an innovative UK engineering and technology company. The permanent office based job will be within the technology design and manufacturing facility based south of Bristol. We produce bespoke products to fulfil customer requirements in harsh and hazardous environments, including CCTV, 3G/4G connected sensors and communications equipment. All products produced are subject to accredited external testing for an industrial environment.

    The right candidate will be motivated to facilitate the hardware engineer’s development of products and capable of delivering assemblies, drawings and modification to PCBs. You will be able to demonstrate experience of developing wiring and components of embedded products. Testing of electronic assemblies at a hardware level will be required, testing of embedded products as a system will be a plus. You will be in a hardware development group responsible for development for the electronic, electrical and mechanical aspects of embedded systems, and to produce these systems in conjunction with software, test and services group.     The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic hands-on Engineer with experience of multi-discipline product development. The technician will be driven to deliver assemblies, products and solutions working with design engineers. Technicians could be expected to travel to equipment sites, both office and installation sites. This will be in the U.K and is typically for short periods.

    What will I be doing?

    • Collaborate with hardware engineers and assist by building, planning and modifying components
    • Work from incomplete schematics, drawings and part lists to produce and fit prototype wiring looms using hand crimp tools, preferably to IPC-620
    • Assembly of prototypes (metalwork, enclosures, PCB, wiring) based on incomplete information
    • Modification of prototypes (metalwork, enclosures, PCB, wiring) to provide a solution
    • Estimation of effort to prototype from incomplete engineering drawings
    • Estimation of production effort required based upon drawings
    • Documentation/review (drawings and part lists) of wiring looms/schematics
    • Documentation/review of production test procedures on developed hardware
    • Soldering to remove/replace/modify surface mount components down to QFP and 603 size, QFN and 402 preferred
    • Understanding of PCB schematics, regarding wiring interfaces
    • Understanding of mechanical CAD drawings

    About you

    • A strong productive work ethic and attitude
    • Used to working under pressure and meeting deadlines
    • Wiring of looms from schematics, and production of drawings from looms
    • Assemble and test electronic hardware
    • Proficient with multi-meters and oscilloscopes
    • Ability to modify mechanical components with hand tools
    • Ability to solder surface mount components to a high standard
    • Troubleshoot embedded systems
    • Experience of bespoke equipment manufacture to customer requirements
    • Microsoft office capable (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • IT proficient (web-based tools and networked filing systems)

        Desirable skills:

    • Accurate, thorough and consistent work
    • Pro-active and assertive
    • Understanding of embedded product design and development processes
    • Experience with mechanical CAD drawings (SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD preferred)
    • Experience with PCB layout (Altium preferred)
    • Understanding of EMC and environmental testing, and building resilience into a product
