  • About Costain and your project.

Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

Thames Tideway Tunnel, Main Works East is a £604m project recently secured by a Costain joint venture (“CVB”), to provide a new sewage storage and transfer tunnel from Chambers Wharf to Abbey Mills. It includes the main tunnel, a connection tunnel to Greenwich Pumping Station, various shaft constructions, a connection to the newly constructed Lee Tunnel project, and minor works at Beckton Sewage Treatment, all as part of an overall project to reduce sewer discharge overflows into the River Thames. The works are scheduled to commence on site in June 2016 and complete in March 2024.
CVB have engaged two consultancies to prepare temporary work designs for the project. In addition, we have a small temporary works design team preparing designs which can be delivered more efficiently than the consultancies are able to do. The CVB team requires additional designers with temporary works design experience to fulfil the tasks and responsibilities outlined below.

    • Undertake design checks of the temporary work designs prepared by others
    • Liaising and coordinating to facilitate any external category design checks of your designs

    • Ensuring a Design Risk Assessment has been carried out and mitigations are adequately communicated on the design documents
    • Complete the handover of designs to the construction teams to ensure full understanding of the design residual risks
    • Consider and respond to Field Change Requests, Design Change Applications and Non-Conformance Reports
    • Engage with third parties in communicating aspects of the design that require explanation or clarification
    • Ensuring that you have the correct design information on time to meet delivery schedules
    • Ensuring changes to design requirements or to critical information are formally communicated to and agreed with the Designers and Checkers
    • Ensuring designs are coordinated with the permanent works, with other temporary works, with existing assets and with existing and newly installed services
    • Ensuring, when required, that adequate coordination/ liaison has taken place with the Permanent Works Designer, the Lead Designer and Principal Designer on design issues and information for the Health and Safety File

    • Assist in the management of the communication process between Designers, Checkers, the Temporary Works Coordinator and the Construction Team
    • Ensure that a design brief has been established with full consultation, is adequate, is in accord with the actual situation on site and ensuring all construction loads are considered.
    • Ensure the permanent works designer is advised of any temporary conditions or loads that should be considered in the permanent works design
    • Ensure where appropriate, that the design is made available to other interested parties e.g. third-party asset owners, the Client's representative and the Principal Designer

    • Ensure that checks are made on the design at appropriate stages of construction or decommissioning covering the more critical factors

    • Obtain (usually from the permanent works designer) the criteria that aIlow the temporary works to be removed, the criteria for temporary loading, and so forth

    • Include these criteria within the design documents

    • When required review RAMS documents for consistency and compatibility with the design
